There is no doubting the increase of email accounts being hacked and hijacked for the purposes of sending spam or running phishing campaigns. Most of these are being done in a automated fashion through malware like bots. If you think you may be a victim of an account intrusion you can begin by checking for these symptoms:

  1. Messages in your “Sent” folder which you did not send
  2. Your account is locked out
  3. Account blocked messages when you try to login
  4. Signatures with spam messages in them or phishing links
  5. Vacation messages with spam messages in them or phishing links
  6. You can’t recover your password

These are some of the most common ways to tell if someone has actually gained access to your account which meaning your password was likely compromised.
