If you are one of the unfortunate people who have had their online email account hijacked you may be spending some quality time with technical support trying to prove that YOU ARE YOU and not a hacker. After all, you wouldn’t want just anyone to be able to act like they were you  and get your password changed.

Here are things you should locate if at all possible. They may still be  in your offline email client if you used something like Microsoft Outlook or Thunderbird :

  • Emails you have sent to friends recently
  • Names of folders that were in your account
  • Contacts in your account’s address book
Also, the following information which was originally used (but possibly changed by a hijacker) is very helpful:
  • Credit card data you used to sign up if it’s a paid account
  • Original or previous security questions and answers used
  • Address you used in your profile when you signed up
  • Original mobile phone number you may have used
  • Any other original data used when you signed up for the account
Some of this historical info can be referred to by customer support offices to assit in authenticating your identity. This information should always be stored offline somewhere when you setup a new account for ANY online service, ESPECIALLY those which are free but you rely on heavily. Look to our future posts on ways to create proofs for your online identity.

It’s possible if you follow some of the same principals especially, historic data you have access to. In the future we will be adding FaceBook specific guidance. Best of luck and do let us know how you make out.
